Exhibit: An Education for Whom? Asian American Studies at Cornell
Explore the origin of the Asian American Studies Program, and the wider struggle for establishing ethnic studies at Cornell University. Focusing on Asian and Asian American student experiences, this exhibit seeks to showcase oral histories and perspectives of past alumni through a re-telling of student Asian American activism and political organizing. Exhibit: Cornell’s Game Studies Collection: Playing, developing, and reading games
In 2024, Cornell University Library established our Game Studies Collection. The study of games and the use of game-based media is growing both here at Cornell and at other similar institutions. At Cornell, students can learn about game histories, economics, music, cultural impacts, and influences, while also learning how to create games. This exhibit celebrates the connections games have with literature, history, and other games, as well as the relationship the Cornell community has with games. Featured in this case are materials highlighted in Cornell courses, donated by Cornell faculty, and developed here at Cornell! We hope to continue to expand this collection in the coming years with the support of the Cornell community (past and present).

Exhibit: The Power of Food: Confronting Climate Change One Meal at a Time
Food is essential for life, but it is also emotive, personal, and deeply embedded in our cultures and family histories. The new Mann Library lobby exhibit The Power of Food: Confronting Climate Change One Meal at a Time showcases ways in which climate change is impacting the flavors, nutritional quality, and prices of the foods we love and need. Providing insight into how changes in the climate are impacting what we eat, the exhibit—a collaboration between Mann Library, the students of the course "Climate Change and Your Future" (ALS 1150), and Dr. Michael Hoffman, lead author of Our Changing Menu (Cornell University Press, 2021)—this exhibit also spotlights the ways that thinking about food can catalyze ideas and energy for taking action and making positive change possible.

Black Print: African American Writing 1773-1910
Before social media, before #BlackTwitter, there was nineteenth-century Black print. "We struggle against opinions. Our warfare lies in the field of thought," proclaimed the 1847 National Convention of Colored People held in Troy, NY.
Black Print draws on Cornell's rich Africana Rare and Manuscript Collections to highlight the many ways Black Americans have used print and the press as spaces for artistic expression, communication and organizing, antislavery activism, humor, education, civil rights, and imagining new worlds. These items, ranging from poetry collections and autobiographies to novels and newspapers, showcase early African American literature and Black artistic expression, what Dorothy Porter described as the "beginnings of the Afro-American's artistic consciousness."
Black Print offers a snapshot of a robust community of writers thinking actively about Black life and Black art—the beautiful and the sublime, politics and popular culture—primarily through periodicals, pamphlets, and other ephemeral forms. Featured are works held in Cornell University Library's Rare and Manuscript Collections by Phillis Wheatley, Frederick Douglass, Frances E. W. Harper, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Sojourner Truth, and many more.
This exhibit was made possible through the generous support of the Stephen E. and Evalyn Edwards Milman Fund for Exhibitions.

Exhibition: "Arthur Jafa: Love is the Message, The Message is Death"
Arthur Jafa’s 2016 video "Love is the Message, The Message is Death" explores Black identity, history, and culture in America. Set to Kanye West’s gospel-inspired track "Ultralight Beam," the video uses a rapidly edited montage of mostly found footage to convey the complexities of Black life in the United States. It includes images of civil rights leaders like Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., moments of Black cultural achievement, and disturbing clips of police violence against Black people. As curator Helen Molesworth describes, Jafa’s “meticulously edited seven-minute video suspends viewers in a swelling, emotional montage” that captures both the beauty and the horror of Black life in the United States. Catch this powerful work before it closes on June 8.

Exhibition: "Home Making: Artists and the Domestic"
This exhibition is a collaboration between the Johnson Museum of Art and the College of Human Ecology (CHE) in celebration of CHE’s hundredth anniversary. It explores artistic interpretations of the domestic from the mid-1960s to today. Home Making examines how artists have questioned, redefined, and reconceptualized the idea of home, presenting the modern home as a space of play, contemplation, and creative inquiry.
Featuring works drawn from the permanent collection of the Johnson Museum, the Cornell University Library’s Human Sexuality Collection, and CHE’s Department of Human Centered Design collections—including the Cornell Fashion + Textile Collection—this exhibition highlights pieces by Sally Mann, Andy Warhol, and Michael Jang, among others.
Step inside a partially framed house built just for this exhibition, and take a seat—literally—by trying out the unique chairs from the Iconic Chair Collection, scattered throughout the space. Visitors can also engage with a hands-on interactive area, offering a glimpse into CHE's Design Resource Library (dLib), where materials, textures, and design elements come to life.

Exhibition: "Suzi Ferrer"
A member of the Class of 1962, Suzi Ferrer (née Susan Nudelman) became a pioneering visual artist during her decade in Puerto Rico. This exhibition traces her evolution from early Art Brut and abstract expressionist influences to her 1970s works that explore issues of gender, sexuality, body politics, and pop culture. Curated by Melissa M. Ramos Borges, PhD, "Suzi Ferrer" debuted at the Museo de Arte y Diseño de Miramar in San Juan and was organized at the Johnson Museum by Andrea Inselmann, the Gale and Ira Drukier Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. After decades out of public view, these remarkable pieces are now on display—see them before the exhibition closes on Sunday, June 8.

Talk: "What is Environmental Art and What Can It Do for Us?" A Discussion about Science and Art in a Time of Climate Change
In conjunction with the exhibition Invasive Species: A Collaborative Exhibit on display in the Mann Library Gallery, Catskill artist and writer Hovey Brock and Cornell forest entomologist Mark Whitmore bring science and art together in an interactive program for Cornell alumni. Following Mark’s introduction to what science can currently tell us about the threat of hemlock woolly adelgid and other invasive pests currently afflicting North American forests, Hovey will involve audience members in a discussion of why environmental art matters in our quest for solutions to the climate crisis. All art evokes emotions, and environmental art reflects and channels the emotions—sadness, anger, distress—that we feel about the impacts of a rapidly warming planet: floods, fires, vanishing species and habitats. Maybe you have seen those impacts in your own back yard? The feedback you give as part of the discussion will be added to the exhibit currently on display in the Mann Gallery. We look forward to your input!

Film Screening, The Artist and the Astronaut: Class of '75
Enter Uris Hall on the ground floor opposite Statler. This award winning documentary shows the parallel lives of two very different people, an artist and astronaut. The artist, wife of Cornell football coach Jack Musick, gives great insights into campus life during the politically challenging times of Cornell in the late 60’s and early 70’s. In contrast, through the astronaut’s early career, we can follow the heady days of the early space program in NASA. Because of Jack Musick’s untimely death in 1977, and a divorce 1000 miles away, the artist and astronaut eventually “discover” each other in Houston. The evolution of the artist’s work had embraced increasingly cultural issues, while the astronaut found a meaningful post-NASA role in partnering with the artist’s work. This film has a unique Cornell connection, within the large contexts of the political turmoil of the 60’s, the race in space, and the sensitive cultural themes in the art work of Pat Musick Carr, PhD ’74. After completing her PhD in the Fall of 1974, she celebrated commencement by marching in May of 1975. A Q&A will follow the screening.

Talk: "Seeing the Ice Through New Eyes: Capturing Earth's Changing Poles from Beneath"
Among the many challenges of discerning how Earth's poles are responding to climate change is one that is inherent to the problem itself: it's hard to get to the bottom of all that ice. Beneath tens to hundreds to thousands of meters of ice lie the interfaces that define how the ice is changing, and how it impacts our future. Over the past 30 years, hot water drilling has enabled access to some of these regions and peeled back the ice cover to better understand the ocean and sediments below it. But only recently has the most dynamic part of the system become accessible—by drilling near grounding zones where the ice, ocean, and bed meet. For the past 10 years, our team has developed the Icefin vehicle to reveal never before information about these critical places. Icefin is a novel, modular and (relatively) low logistics underwater vehicle. Carrying a comprehensive suite of oceanographic sensors as well as cameras and sonars to perceive, explore and map the ice, ocean and seafloor has given us new eyes with which to capture this world below the ice.
We have now had the chance to observe everything from Antarctic ice shelves to Greenland glaciers with Icefin. These regimes span from large to small, from warm- to cold-based, and open ocean to under ice rivers. In each environment, we have been able to resolve key details of the dynamics that have been unobservable by other means. In this presentation, we will share examples from Icefin's exploration of Antarctica from Thwaites Glacier and Fimbul Ice shelf as well as the glaciers of Wolstenhome Fjord, Greenland. Excitingly, comparisons of the ice-ocean interactions across these regimes shows promise towards refining how we understand the driving processes across diverse climate conditions. With any luck, these new observations will help improve forecasts of future change, and motivate new voyages of discovery.

What happens when economists and computer scientists get together to talk about real world issues? During this Reunion collaboration between the College of Arts & Sciences and the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, we will explore both the opportunities and risks of using AI in economic systems. From shaping markets to optimizing everyday decisions, algorithms play a powerful role in economics and daily life. Professor Francesca Molinari, the H.T. Warshow and Robert Irving Warshow Professor of Economics, will examine how econometric methods can help detect and mitigate algorithmic biases, with a focus on fairness in AI. Professor Éva Tardos, the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor of Computer Science, will discuss how individually optimized algorithms—such as those governing internet traffic or shared roadways—can impact overall system performance and how we can design better systems for collective benefit. They will also highlight how Cornell’s strength in computer science and economics has driven innovation in education. From a look at past Daily Sun articles highlighting movements on-campus to student-led journals of the 1980s, An Education for Whom? invites students, faculty, and alumni alike to rethink the history of Asian American Studies.

Times
